Meg Whitman narrowly defeats Jerry Brown in 2010. How would her re-election bid go in 2014?

I think it's highly unlikely that she would have beat Brown in 2010. Another Democrat maybe, but not Brown.

If she did win in 2010, however, I think she would be a good bet to hold on in 2014.

I think it depends on what led Whitman to her 2010 victory. Was it more opposition to Brown than support for Whitman? If yes, then Whitman could definitely lose re-election. If she just had enough personal magnetism, she could still lose but it would probably be close. Someone like Kamala Harris, Antonio Villaraigosa, or Gavin Newsom would likely run and any one of them could defeat Whitman.
