It is remarkable that there is virtually no diversity among senior staff in the Senate, yes, and to the detriment of our lawmakers' ability to represent our diverse country. This isn't about breaking a barrier that was broken long ago; it's about what happens for the long haul, after the crowds have gone home.

For example, it wouldn't be remarkable in historic change if the next Democratic President appoints a diverse Cabinet, but it will be a huge change for public policy and diversity in opinion making from the current Trump cabinet where there is only one African-American, a surgeon who was assigned to Housing and Urban Development because of Trump's very limited conception of what he could do.
