I can only imagine the apocalyptic nightmare that would come if New Jersey also implemented such a thing.

They use to have locks on our gas pumps here in Florida, where you could click it in place and let the pump work itself until the tank is filled. I never see them anymore (I suspect there had been accidents and such and have been banned as a result), aside from the shady little Shell station on the corner by my house.
they still have those in the midwest.

I was about to say—those are fairly normal.
Weird - every gas station I know of in Palm Beach County spare one does not have them, and they used to be very commonplace. Like, you can still see where they once were on any given pump, but they've been removed. I'd be curious to know what happened to them.

...I see these on every gas pump handles everywhere.

Though I suppose you can't trust Floridians with such complex devices.

What is the political resistance to changing this in OR and NJ?

The fact that 48 other states already allow self-service gasoline seems like pretty irrefutable, evidence-based proof that there's nothing wrong with it.

It would lose jobs.

Yeah, that's my main concern about it. But I'd just pass a law requiring all gas stations to have workers during certain times, and make it legal to pump your own gas.

I’ve never been to a gas station that didn’t have those locks.

I imagine that since in OR it's only impacting counties with <40k people, it's largely an elderly "I don't want things to change in any way whatsoever" response more than anything.

This could be the only possible explanation.

The other 48 states seemed to manage just fine.

I can understand trying to use policy to defend "good" jobs (i.e. unionized, middle class salary jobs with benefits) but it's not like the people who pump gas can't just go work at Taco Bell or something.

Due to growing up in NJ, I found it weird that in other states, people had to pump their own gas. It’s just so convenient, especially in the wintertime.

You are completely insane if you expect me to get out of a car to pump gas. Why should I have to risk my clothes by touching something greasy and disgusting? We have employees who do that for a reason, and there simply isn't enough room in a car to bring another individual along who can do that.

If you get greasy from pumping gas, I think you’re doing it wrong lol.

Or some of the many people who pumped gas before you were doing it wrong.

I use a paper towel to handle the gas pump and I hide my nose in my shirt or my sleeve. I'm more sensitive to my environment than most, but that works okay for me. There should definitely be someone there to pump the gas for people if they need it.  But requiring it does not make sense from a health perspective either.  One person pumping gas for 500 healthy people most likely creates a greater health risk than each of those people pumping gas for themselves.
