Was 2016 an election where large amounts of voters who voted for the losers in the primaries ie. Sanders, Cruz etc voted third party?

Yes. I was one of them (Sanders-Johnson) and I suspect (and surveys support the idea) that for every Sanders-Johnson voter, there were about 2 Sanders-Stein voters and about 4 Sanders-Trump voters.

Kasich-Clinton and Kasich-Johnson were also popular, I would think.

I'd also guess that almost all McMullin voters in Utah and Idaho voted for Cruz in the primary.
