Without spending lots of time on research, I would say her performance with this voting group was abysmal everywhere.  For example--in certain rural counties in Georgia (with large numbers of whites), Hillary barely received 10-15% of the vote.

I would not put the entire blame on her though.  The downward trend for the Democrats in these areas has been dramatic in the last 20 years.

Clinton got over a third of the vote in heavily white rural smoky mountain counties in NC (ex. Jackson) and in central Virginia counties (ex. Nelson). These are probably the highest, assuming you exclude white Hispanics.

This map shows the percent of the White vote that Clinton won in every county.

Looking at non-urban Southern counties with low MHIs, both Oktibbeha County, MS and Lafayette, County MS have a high-percentage of Clinton Whites - 26.5%.

Jackson County, NC Whites were 39% for Clinton.

Isn't Oktibbeha a college county? If so, I'm not sure you can treat it as a "poor white rural" area in the same sense (though I suppose it can be argued).

Jackson, NC is in that cluster of counties where a strong Native American presence exists (though if memory serves, the greatest concentration is in Swain): while I don't doubt reagente's work, self-identification and racial identity there (much like in Robeson, NC; in OK; etc) is muddied at best. Democrats have performed exceptionally well in western NC (relatively) in modern times, though, so this isn't an anomaly. My 2012 white vote project had Obama winning 45% of whites in Jackson.

Dem performance in rural Middle TN still seems anomalously high compared to surrounding areas of KY/AL/GA.

Where does this data come from? I thought there were a lot of states without exit polls asking about race.

I don't mean to distract from this thread, but from the white voters map, I see Taos, NM (a majority Hispanic county with only a 32K pop.) with 70.2% for Clinton. This is even higher than the 69.9% actual result. Every other county with over 70% of white voters for Clinton already is stereotyped as white liberals.

As for the thread, Oktibbeha and Lafayette counties in Mississippi have major universities (so they don't really count as "poor rural whites" in a cultural sense). Jackson County, NC has a university while not that big by NC state standards, shows up in a county of 40K.
