Remember that this was before the recession of 08 and the 2006 democratic congressional wave. Republicans were seen as more likely to win.

I dunno, third terms are rarely easy to win. There is a reason it doesn't happen that often. And considering how polarized the country got and how weak GWB's wins were, I'm not sure why he would think Bush's potential Republican successor would be a shoe-in.

Sure, but McCain specifically at that time was pretty popular:

and was seen to have a fair amount of crossover appeal:

The standard CW of the time (not just among Naso-types) was that he was by far the strongest GE contender the GOP could put up in '08.  "Very easy win" may be hyperbole, but most people back then figured McCain would be the heavy favorite in the GE if he were to actually manage to get the nomination.

I wish he had been elected President because then he would have kicked Putin's a$$ for going after Crimea and destroyed the anti-American terrorists.

John McCain is easily the least outrageous entry on a list that includes Mark Sanford, T-Paw, and George Pataki, of all people.

Not to mention the suggestion that Rick Sanitorium "would make election rather close." (I wish that I had a dollar for every conversation in which "but I'm a strict Catholic" came up...)

It's a time capsule on what passed for conventional wisdom among a certain crowd, let's give it that.
i also remember pence coming up more than a few times.unfortunate that it didn't end there
