While he was certainly correct in condemning bigotry, he really should have condemned white supremacy specifically.

     Agreed. It seems that left-wingers also engaged in political violence and while political violence from both ends is wrong and demands the strongest possible condemnation (and in that sense the "many sides" observation was an important one), but we also need to note that the white supremacists started this.
