5. Kemp
6. Ridge
7. Thompson
8. Forbes
9. Hatch
10. Gingrich

I think Kemp or Danforth would win.

It would be really hard for anyone to win , and I would say It would go to a contested convention between these 4 candidates: McCain, Kemp, Danforth, and Thompson . In the contested convention I would say they probably go with McCain-Danforth as the ticket

What an awful field. I'd write-in Pat Buchanan.

Didn't know who Danforth is, but from what I read about him, and from his opinion on my litmus issue (same sex marriage), he's an FF. Nonetheless:

1. Pataki
2. Danforth

3. McCain
4. Ridge

5. Whitman

6. Thompson
7. Forbes
8. Kemp

9. Hatch

10. Gingrich

11. Keyes

Danforth was the other name floated at the end of Bush's VP selection process, before he went with Cheney.  I do wonder, if Bush had picked Danforth instead of Cheney as his running mate, would the Iraq War have ever happened?  No Cheney means, conceivably, someone other than Rumsfeld is picked for SecDef (since Cheney and Rumsfeld were pals from the Ford administration, I'm assuming that Cheney argued in favor of picking Rumsfeld for SecDef).  It's not obvious what happens with Iraq in a Cheney-less, Rumsfeld-less Bush administration.

Ridge was, I believe, an early choice for Defense. Bush may have looked at a CEO as well.

Cheney pushed for Rumsfeld as SecDef in order to counter Colin Powell, who Cheney perceived as too dovish.
