Puerto Rico Governor Rossello is moving ahead with the Tennessee Plan for Puerto Rico. The most recent step in the campaign is the selection of two senators and five congressmen for the new state of Puerto Rico.
This move is part of what’s known as the Tennessee Plan, because the territory of Tennessee was the first to use it in an effort to speed up their path to statehood. Congress was dragging its heels in making Tennessee a state, so Tennessee declared itself a state and sent its delegation to Washington.
The delegation was not welcomed, and Congress was firm in denying Tennessee the right to declare itself a state, but it was just a few more months before Congress took action and made Tennessee a state. Since then, a number of other territories, including California and Alaska, have used the Tennessee Plan to gain statehood.

The representatives chosen by the the governor:
Carlos Romero Barceló, former Resident Commissioner, former Governor of Puerto Rico, former vice-chair of the U.S. Congress Hispanic Caucus
Pedro Rosselló González, former Governor of Puerto Rico, former chair of the Southern Governors Association
Charlie Rodriguez Colon, President of the Puerto Rico Senate, chair of the Puerto Rico Democratic Party
Iván Rodríguez, Baseball Hall of Fame honoree
Luis Fortuño, former Resident Commissioner, former Governor of Puerto Rico
Major General Felix Santoni, U.S. Army Outstanding Civilian Service Award
Zoraida Fonalledas, co-chair of Republican National Committee Growth and Opportunity Projects Commission, National Committeewoman Republican Party of Puerto Rico
This impressive collection of leaders, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties, should be a valuable addition to the U.S. Congress.

Well, I wish them luck with this, but I'd say it is doomed to failure. The Republican Party doesn't really care what Puerto Rico wants, and the GOP has eaten much, much worse press over all kinds of things in the past decade alone, so they will calculate that no one is going to pay attention to it.

Maybe I'm just too cynical about all of this, but those kinds of stunts are meaningless these days. When the Senate majority party brazenly steals a Supreme Court and then attempts to ram through a bill reshaping 1/6th of the economy, developed almost entirely in the shadows with little to no public hearings, and let's not even get into Trump, I'd say they are well past the point of common decency.

Everything is about power now, even more so then it used to be. Nothing else matters to people like McConnell. It's really become that simple, and the addition of Puerto Rico would almost surely reduce his share of power.

They've got to send 1 Democrat and 1 Republican to the Senate or this is a total non-starter. No promises for future elections, but neither party is going to agree to change the margin in the Senate.

The House is less important since the Republicans have a large margin and everyone's up for re-election next year anyway, but it would be smart to send 3 Democrats and 2 Republicans, and try to beat the 2 Rs next year.

Most are Ds, as expected, but some of those people are absolutely incompetent. Whatever, compared to the president, lol.

While the Republicans control Congress this will go nowhere. And wild Puerto Rico is a fiscal disaster they will have sufficient coverage to claim opposition on something other than political and racial grounds.

I hope this goes somewhere. It's a good plan, even if it's an old one. Also some nice names there: Rosselló's father and Fortuño

It would be hard to create a better list of Puerto Rican political talent to send. Smart to leave off hacks like Padilla and Acevedo
