They adjourned the session without having the full state House address it, noting that it would be addressed next session - August I believe.

I guess this makes sense. If they can't suppress enough votes, why not just impeach them? That way, before Cooper can appoint a replacement, they can also try and change the law to allow the General Assembly to appoint replacements. Or even better, if the appointee requires confirmation by the state Senate, they can just refuse to confirm anyone except their own handpicked successor!

But I say, why stop there? Why not just abolish elections in North Carolina and name Republicans the state's permanent governing party? The party can then pick state officials.

They know what the consequences of that would be. The people couldn't vote them out, but they could use their 2nd Amendment rights to take care of the situation. So they have to be more subtle about it.

Trump has emboldened Republicans to just straight up lie and destroy political opponents using USSR-style kangaroo courts + phony accusations.

Even if she did what they say and its as bad as this Republican is ranting about, I think it hardly seems to justify impeachment. Maybe censure. I'd also say, what about all the unconstitutional things the NCGOP has done since they took power in 2011? They've been getting maps and laws tossed out left and right for being racially discriminatory, and they want to impeach this woman for this?

At some point the NCGOP has to accept that their state isn't a Wyoming-level Republican/conservative utopia. It's a purple state whose electorate is pretty evenly split. They need to find a way to accept that Democrats are just as eligible to hold power as they are, and that they aren't some holy political party anointed by God himself.

At this rate, the NCGOP is going to pull a Brownback and screw up so colossally, they end up becoming a permanent minority.

I will reserve judgment on this action until the select committee is formed (assuming it is indeed formed) and completes its investigation. Screaming "WAA!!! WAA!!! NCGOP IS MEAN!!!" is nothing but partisan hackery, especially at this early stage.

We already have a good idea on what it is about, and the this kind of behavior is hardly new for the NCGOP. It's not like it is overreacting to an isolated incident. And "ncgop is mean!" is actually a pretty valid statement.

So one or more of us are partisan hacks. Got it. Anything else you want to share?

There is nothing in here stipulating that you have to be a citizen to be a notary public in North Carolina, only that you have to be a legal resident.

More thinly-veiled racist witch hunting from the NC GOP.

Even if what they say she did is true, it's hard to believe them, considering he NC GOP has undermined its own credibility countless times now. They make up stories about voter fraud to justify passing voter ID laws, only to have them thrown out, for example.

If the select committee rules that she did do something wrong, it could eventually lead to the Supreme Court.

GOP politicians live in their own universe. They gobble up talk radio, Internet conspiracy theories, and Fox News. They are convinced that there are nefarious shadowy groups of people out to get them at all times. The NCGOP is basically a lynch mob looking for someone to hang.

Reality doesn't even matter with these people. They'll read a phony story on Breitbart and launch full scale investigations using tax payer dollars on what any person with a 50+ IQ could tell is obviously a fake news story.

We can only hope SCOTUS rules gerrymandering unconstitutional to save us from 40 years of failed Republican dominated politics that has nothing to show for it other than trillions in debt and 2 failed wars.
Yes because gerrymandering guarantees Republican controlled politics for 40 years Roll Eyes
The rest of your post is solid though.

Have her impeached by the house, but acquitted by the Senate as a fair and balanced moderate response.

Well the NC legislature is heavily gerrymandered but that's separate from the point of this never ending 40 years of Reganism dominated Republican rule. The GOP knows it's done so they're trying to grandfather their failed ideas by gerrymandering state legislatures to pass Constitutional Amendments. We're due for a realignment soon and it can't come quick enough to toss these muh culture warrior hacks into the dustbin of history.
I absolutely agree with your view on the NC GOP in general, but I think we need to more optimistic overall about the national scene. Gerrymandering can backfire, and it isn't impregnable. And in any case, Republicans could lose big time if in 2018 they do badly on state level and Dems get the power to block GOP gerrymanders and/or put their own in states like Colorado. Your post simply exuded so much pessimism, more than I think is fair.

It's not partisan hackery....the NCGOP is acting like a third world oligarchy at this point.

Can you imagine if the Democrats did this in any state?  The Republicans would be screaming at the top of their lungs.

North Carolina GOP are absolutely bat sh**t.

Let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that the NC GOP doesn't know what it's doing. They know exactly what they're doing.

They're just evil.

It doesn't nearly get down to that level of hyperpartisanship, but the MD GOP often complains about gerrymandering and veto overrides.

I mean, that's better than what happened the LAST time someone challenged 1 party rule in North Carolina. They're getting downright polite at this point.

Considering your guy's track record on predictions...I wouldn't be so smug.

While it may be true that the GOP could technically continue dominating state legislatures for the next couple of years; by 2024, Millennials will crowd out both Boomers and Gen Xers combined in eligible voting population. From then on out, you'll see a gradual decline in the power of the Republican Party as it stands now.

Particularly if they continue to embrace the alt-right, Trumpism, etc. If they do, it isn't a matter of whether a realignment election happens, but when it happens.
