I contributed for the first time recently to a former Iraqi translator who worked with my friend when he was in the Army. He finally immigrated to the US with his wife and kids a few months ago and needed a bit of help while he looked for a job. I felt it was a worthy cause.

I'm not sure I would do it for someone I didn't have any connection with though.

I have for folks I know or situations I know to be true, but I won't just do it for anyone for any reason.

I've contributed to musicians, though I like the idea of a Kickstarter or Indiegogo better because of the idea that I (usually) get an exclusive item in return.
