By 'by year,' I meant by calendar year, not age. Particularly, I'd like the numbers for 2004 and 1896.

Oh, you meant "What was the adult population in what year"?
Well, obviously, only estimates exist, and not even these for times as far back as 1896.

There was a census in 1790, and every ten years there after.

Every ten years, not every year.
Overall census populations, in a pdf. But that's not including adult population.
The data should exist, at least for the nonslave population. Haven't found it yet, though.

I can just take the numbers for 1890 and 1900, add the two together, and divide it in half to get a rough estimate.

The 1920 census was destroyed if you are looking for anything in that era. Just to warn you ahead of time.

Er, 1920 appears to be in the table Lewis posted.

As far as I know a majority of the 1920 census was destroyed in a fire. Maybe it was 1890? I know one of them was destroyed for sure.

Uh, it took eight years for the 1880 census? What did they do about reapportionment?

Sounds to me like they probably still have the totals, just not specific information on individuals.

I personally think they should scrap the multi-question census, and just ask one question: how many people live at this residence?

US census bureau - population estimates by age, sex and race - 1900-1979

You'll have to do a little math or estimating (or import it into excel if you have it) to get the total counts, but the information you request seems to be there.

You should have no problem finding post 1980 numbers on the census site.
