Clark only because Clark would lose so bad nationally.

One of the few things I'd agree with you on.

If Romney were the GOP nominee, in all honesty, I can't see him winning Massaschusetts against any credible Democratic candidate.

I'd like to be able to say in all honesty that he could win Massachusetts, but I can't see it happening against a good Democrat.

Romney could, however, win the overalll election.

First of all, Zell Miller would never be nominated by the Democrats.  Second of all, do you honestly believe that Romney wouldn't beat Miller in Utah?  Take into consideration that Romney is a Mormon.

Romney is pro-choice, Miller pro-life.  That might mean more the Utahans than the religion of Romney, but it'd be close.  I doubt there's a "Mormon Pride!!!!!" thing going on.

"On a personal basis, I don't favor abortion," he said. "However, as governor of the commonwealth, I will protect a woman's right to choose under the laws of the country and the commonwealth. That's the same position I've had for many years." --Mitt Romney, 2002

A presidential election between Mitt Romney for the Republicans and Zell Miller for the Democrats would result in a landslide win for Romney across the country.  Zell Miller is simply not credible as a presidential candidate, and the nation would realize that.

romney did surprisingly well in some pretty liberal areas of massachusetts.

for example, he carried middlesex county, a feat even paul celluci couldnt manage.

i dont like romney.  but he is damn good at what he does.

Running for Governor and President would yield drastically different results.  You know that, you're a smart man.

yes, i realize that.

however, i think it is *possible* romney could carry massachusetts.  granted, he would probably have to win nationally by 5+ points before mass would become close.

It also would depend on what candidate he was facing.

If he faced Bayh or even Breaux (no chance he runs though) he might have some semblance of a chance.  Against a more liberal candidate like Clinton or Feingold, no shot.

i actually think romney would have one of his better shots of carrying mass if clinton were the candidate.

1. clinton would lose in a near landslide nationally.  a lot of democrats would likely stay home
2. romney defeated a hillary-esque candidate in shannon obrien.  i realize it was just a governor's race.  but he won in a lot of areas of the state where a republican, much less a *conservative* shouldnt win.

Romney didn't run as a conservative for Governor, he ran as a moderate.  He's run as a more conservative candidate for the presidency in a effort to shore up the base so I think that sees him conceding MA in order to keep conservatives in his boat.

He could win MA against a centrist Dem if he runs as a moderate, but neither will happen.

I know that doesn't seem like a response to your post, but it's the best I could do.  I didn't know where to go with this thing.

Romney most likely wouldn't win Mass in most realisitic circumstances, but he could DEFINITELY get 45+ percent, and make the Democrats spend money in Taxachusetts.

If only the Republicans would abandon convention and nominate Romney!  Then maybe we could storm their rallies and bring flip-flops.  Oh yeah!  But you have to sign a waiver for theirs!
