Take a person from either of those moments, plop them in the present, and tell them that society hasn't radically changed.
I mean, society will obviously be radically different 300 or 600 years from now. My point is that there have been periods of violent external invasion, or violent internal shakeups, that a society that is recognizably Western has survived for hundreds of years, that make our times look peaceful, uneventful, and stable (which, in all fairness, compared with 99.99% of human history, they are).
