Trivia: When January 1999, his last days on office, Governor Fob James commuted one death sentence (the only such commutation in Alabama since executions there resumed), he later explained it because death sentence was imposed by the judge against jury's recommendation.

The issue in Florida was that the death penalty phase only required a majority of the jury until the Florida Supreme Court ruled that was no good. The legislature revised the law to require unanimity for the death penalty phase as well.
