Suppose in 2020 the Democratic Primary consists of 3 candidates:

Sherrod Brown
Kamala Harris
Oprah Winfrey

Yes I know its unlikely, but lets just assume. If you were in charge of Sherrod Brown's campaign how would you run it?  What issues would you focus on, what voters would you target, and how would you plan to defeat Harris and Oprah. While both are inexperienced, they do both have the whole identity politics thing going for them.

I would try to re-assemble the Bernie wing. Get young people and the blue collar workers on your side and let the other two divide the Hillary wing.

I would play both the "elder statesman" and "lovely grandpa" cards hard. Sherrod Brown can and must  build a public image of an experimented, yet relatable politician.

Point out that Sherrod Brown has been a solid progressive fighting powerful interests who has hopefully just won his 5th election statewide in Ohio, a state that no Republican has become President without.

What Hoosier Nick said. Reassemble the Bernie base. Oprah and Harris will split the Clinton 2016 base.

Pointing out the Ohio thing too much risks sounding Kasichy, but if he gets re-elected by an impressive margin (rather than, say, barely scraping by during a Democratic wave while Heitkamp and Donnelly are easily re-elected) he can certainly use it to his advantage. Also unite the Bernie wing while making inroads with minorities, particularly Hispanics, and expanding Bernie's map in the Midwest, hopefully winning Ohio (duh), Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and South Dakota. Attack Harris for the Mnuchin thing (I think that's her only real scandal?) and Oprah for being too much like Trump. And of course defend Brown's own record as a progressive who has fought for various things that Democratic primary voters would like.

That said, I'd probably vote for Harris in this scenario. I like Brown but he's a little overrated (at least on Atlas) as a presidential candidate.
