Secretary of State Shantel Krebs has announced she will run for the open house seat. I think she has just become the instant front-runner for the GOP nomination.

Ex-Daugaard Chief of Staff Dusty Johnson actually announced 3 months ago, and instantly picked up the governor's endorsement.

I don't know how much weight that is going to pull. With competitive primaries for Governor and SD-AL the campaigning on the ground and name recognition are more of the factors that are in play. With Krebs already holding office at the moment I think she has the advantage over a simple endorsement that occurred 3 months earlier by Daugaard.

The election will be held in a normal midterm year and there won't be a special election like in MT, so that should help Republicans a lot. Still, so many open seats... this isn't good for the GOP at all.

Really? Only 4 House Republicans have announced retirement so far. At this point in 2015 there were 3  - not much of an increase.

I wonder if Krebs will use the governor's use of a special session to undo voter-approved initiatives against Johnson. Part of me thinks this could be a referendum on Daugaard's administration.

Why are we talking about Governors, when Krebs is running for House? Huh
