A lot of great data here. Sheds much more light on the issue than most other polls do. I'll probably post some analysis later.

So an abortion ban except in cases of rape, incest, and when a mother's life is threatened seems to be the median position in this country.

If you throw in "or up until the first trimester with those exceptions," I think you got yourself a deal.

Poll was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

My dad was a Knight for a little while back in the 1990s. He said it was a lot of fun, an excuse for all the men to get together and drink beer. Then all these weirdos starting showing up, and they wanted to go protest at abortion clinics and the like. Eventually, the weirdos outnumbered the normals, and the normals all quit.

Not sure if that's remotely typical of the Knights, but if so, I don't know that anything in this poll can be trusted.

this poll is not an outlier in any way, so i see no reason to distrust it.

The poll is conducted by highly respected Marist. Of course, it is more likely to be an outlier than a typical poll (since it is sponsored by "partisans"), so you could "subtract" a couple of points for "house-effect".

Have never seen the American people care more about anyone else other than fetuses. Of course when they are born they don't care anymore and your on your own but when they are in the womb they are like God for rightwingers.

Interesting poll. I'm a bit disappointed that they only divided up Catholics into subgroups, and not Evangelicals, or Nones. Then again the KoC sponsored it, so I guess that's their prerogative.

Someone posts an interesting poll about abortion and we get mindless ad hominem about pro-lifers within two hours. Impressive.

I also love these polls because you get some pretty silly results due to trolling, or people not understanding the question. For example, did you know that 2% of pro-choicers think abortion should not be permitted in any circumstance and 3% of pro-lifers think abortion should be available for any reason at any time in a pregnancy?

Good find, lots in here.

Even though "pro-choice" outnumbers "pro-life," strong support is evenly matched.  Over a quarter of those polled can identify as either at different times or are unsure how they would describe themselves.

"pro-life": 42%.  "strongly" (.42 x .61) = 25%  "somewhat" (.42 x .17) = 7%  "sometimes think of self as pro-choice" (.42 x .22) = 9%

"pro-choice": 52%. "strongly" (.52 x .52) =  27% "somewhat" (.52 x .23) = 11% "sometimes think of self as pro-life" (.52 x .24) = 12%

"unsure": 6%

So an abortion ban except in cases of rape, incest, and when a mother's life is threatened seems to be the median position in this country.

correct...just not the majority position.

Support for abortion being legal only under these conditions, or or only to save the mother, or never, add up to half.

It does show that the entire meme about kids being all of the sudden "generation Pro-Life" or that any of the people Democrats do well with are secretly pro-life aren't really true.  Neat poll about abor†ion.

Yay Knights of Columbus! There are corners of the knights where it's really nothing but old guys drinking, but there is great charitable work that most of us do.

I'm glad they regularly do polls like these. I wish there were polls on the subject which should verify the accuracy of this one.

I don't really call them pro-lifers, you give them too much credit that way. The right wording is anti-choice. Women have a right to their own body just as men would love to have control of their body if they could concieve. What male conservative lawmakers are doing to women is basically shamming them for even considering about getting an abortion.
