It strikes me as odd that many Christians will celebrate the birth of the one they believe was born King of the Jews by having ham as the main dish at their Christmas dinner.

I think Christmas is that one time a year where all of us, Christians, Jews, and Muslims, can get together as we put our differences aside and celebrate the birth of God's son, Jesus, by eating a big old ham as we forgive the Muslims for killing Jesus on that dreadful day.  It's important to focus on what unites us as humans.  For every Bin Laden or Adolf Hitler or Jerry Seinfeld, there's a Jermaine Jackson or Virgin Mary.  And that's why I think there's a little bit of Jesus in all of us, but obviously not in a literal sense because we're not all virgins and we don't all have little babies named Jesus.  That's what the Christmas dinner is all about.

Clearly you weren't paying attention when communion was being discussed in your world religions class.

Do Americans usually have ham on Christmas dinner? In France the main dish is usually poultry of some kind.

Either turkey or ham is normal. It's similar to Thanksgiving in that way, but with less bias towards turkey as the meat of choice.
