New York City is the most powerful city in the world. Period. With that, the City Council of NYC makes decisions that could affect national policy. It is a very progressive body, with only 3 Republicans in the Council.
One of the most important Council races is to replace 43rd District City Councilman Democrat
Vincent Gentile, who served the Bensonhurst-Bay Ridge area since 2003. He's term limited, and also controversial. He is facing a lawsuit from an autistic former staffer accusing him of mocking him because of his disabilities. Some people in the area want Gentile to step down, but he is term limited.

Bay Ridge has a growing Arab population, but it is still a Irish and Italian blue collar enclave.
