The drop in global commodity prices is causing some Atlas Blue states to seriously think about rising taxes.

Of course, the taxes they will choose to raise are taxes on consumption that disproportionally hurt the poor.

Some of these legislators advocate for abolishing all taxes in favor of a blanket consumption tax (FairTax), which is quite possibly one of the worst ideas ever produced.

It's safe to conclude that any policy instituted by the GOP rewards the wealthy and capital while punishing the poor and working classes. And that they'll sell the policy prescription as empowering "freedom" while advocating "individual responsibility," which are both terms that have come to represent the protection and justification of privilege. Any time I hear either term coming from the right-wing I immediately know it means me and all others who aren't privileged are about to get screwed.

Gee, isn't this the truth. Good insight.

Yeah this was the plan all along. Destroy revenue streams that target their base and raise it on the proles. Only the most delusional believed that TAX CUTS TAX CUTS TAX CUTS would magically grow the economy to the extent the government could still run with no tax at all.

The problem in this country is that taxes are a political issue and they shouldn't be. There are times when taxes should be raised and cut as dictated by the cyclical nature of the economy. Lowering taxes all the time, as republicans propose, is idiotic. Raising taxes on the rich all the time as the democrats propose is equally bad. Lower taxes when you can, raise them if you need to, and generally follow counter cyclical policies
