I'm looking for an answer to this question.

Why do you commit the fallacy of the loaded question?

At first, when I came to Dave's Forum, I thought I had found a place where the posters were more reasonable than the people on Yahoo! Answers who repeatedly ask questions like "Why haven't the Republicans stopped beating their wives?"

Honestly, I don't think titles like this are common at all. It certainly shouldn't make you think "darn it, it's just like Yahoo! Answers." I don't think I am a connoisseur of political forums and I don't particularly like loaded questions like those either, but I think all things considered Atlas is a fine place.

At the same time, admittedly, there was a time in my teens where I asked myself the same question simply because it always seemed like Republicans were going after anything that helped the people most in need. I now know a lot more about why [parties] are doing [what], but from a liberal perspective, what the GOP is constantly proposing - supply-side economics, massive cuts to the social safety net, gutting public schools, etc, it really doesn't look good and it's hard for me to blame some people for wondering if they really do dislike poor people. Personally I believe it's just a severely misguided worldview in combination with the belief that there is only so much govt money to go around and tax breaks for people/organizations of means and money are more important, but I'm a liberal, so that answer is probably to be expected.

That thread title is the definition of flamebait.

I have lost a buttload of respect for Democrats this past month.

This is a not a flamebait question.  It's a serious one considering Paul Ryan wants to gut Medicare ,SNAP and Medicaid.  Sam Johnson  wants to gut Social Security. Donald Trump's choice for HHS Secretary and head of OMB.

Because they are  hateful little sh**ts that assume their political opponents hate as much as them.  They still think the Russians exposing their own lies is why they lost they election (or at least that's what they're telling each other this week, next week it will likely be a different lie they tell themselves, 'cause remember, Democrats NEVER lose an election, they either win or the Putin tricked black people into staying home or gerrymandering or the electoral college or whatever, it was stolen, they didn't lose damn it).

I'd like to think that not all Republicans are completely heartless (I don't think all are), but it's understandable by one would think think they are considering the policies the current GOP leaders push for.  Assistance to the needy is by far the thing that most gets Republican officials ranting about "wasteful spending" when they don't complain much about corporate welfare, military spending, investigating Bill Clinton's blow job, etc.

It's also baffling that several Republicans think the poor don't pay enough taxes.

It's going from 'take responsibility for yourself' to 'neglect yourself, but enrich and pamper the economic elites who are now the only people who0 matter'.

I now regret being an American. I expect to hate life every day that Donald Trump is President.

Particularly now with Republicans I find myself asking the question, "Where is the line between stupidity and malice?" Not that it makes much difference in the end.

It's hard to respect a party who's core base is a group of lilly white, upper-middle class college kids who chant "Dump Trump" in the MN State House unaware that Trump lost Minnesota.

A Trump supporter is attacking the Democratic Party for being too white.

Now I've seen everything.

And lilly-White ... and too upper-middle class.  Trump supporters live in a strange political reality, and the funny thing is self-absorbed liberals are all too eager to perpetuate the stereotypes.  It benefits both of their narratives, which are both false.

Both parties are incredibly obnoxious and self absorbed in their own unique ways. That's why I identify as an independent.

I am weird or does everyone claim that they and their spirit animals  are six figure ubermenschen while accusing their opponents of the same?

Can you truly represent "succesful" "thinking" and be "tuned in" and not "out of touch"? Can anyone?

Social psychology research has consistently shown that conservatives score significantly higher than the general population for personality traits like authoritarianism, social dominance (my group is more valuable than other group), system justification, direct rather than systemic causation (people are poor because of personal failings, not larger systemic forces), and inequality justification.

George Lakoff posits that conservatives view politics according to a hierarchical "strict father" morality, which emphasizes that the world is a harsh and forbidding place, requiring adherence to an unquestioned single authority. Discipline and self-reliance are paramount for the individual to survive and thrive in such a world.

The free market is the ultimate forge for creating discipline and self-reliance; therefore, intervening in the free market saps discipline and self-reliance, distorts outcomes, and ultimately weakens the individual as well as society. To the conservative, therefore, such interventions are immoral because they pose an existential threat.
