Okay are we going to allow write-ins?HuhHuh I need to figure out if I should put that in as an option for every race?
At present, I would suggest not. The relevant clause is:

"In order for a senator to be elected, a forum member must declare his or her candidacy for the senate seat of the region or district they wish to represent. Members residing in that region or district shall then appoint said candidate or opponent by proper electoral process."

1. In order to be elected, one must be a candidate.
2. In order to be an opponent of a candidate, one must oneself be a candidate.
3. To be a candidate, one must declare a candidacy within[/u] 20 days of the election.
4. Write-ins would not have declared their candidacy within[/u] 20 days of the election, so they are not candidates, nor opponents of candidates.
5. Under the second sentence of the said clause, one who is neither a candidate nor a qualified opponent may be elected.
6. Therefore, write-in campaigners are not qualified to win the election.

I have alternative ways of looking at the matter, if anyone is interested.

Certainly you mean at least 20days before the election right? Because if it is within 20days anyone can still declare themselves as a candidate.
Good point. I've made the requisite changes.

I suggest this be clarified, because texasgurl is running as a write-in in one of the Senate seats, and we're almost at election day (OK, for some of you it already is Friday...). I have read all the information on the election and it appears that the issue of write-ins is unclear under the forum rules. IRL, write-ins can 'register' later than the official filing deadlines, but their names don't appear on the 'ballot', and must of course be written in. Hey, a New Mexico House seat was once won by a write-in candidate (CD2 back in the 1980's), so I personally think write-ins should be allowed to increase competition (especially given the large number of unopposed Senate seats in this fantasy election!) as long as it is more difficult to choose them (i.e., the forum equivalent of a write-in spot on a ballot). If everyone wishes to change this requirement for the next election cycle, then you can ban, alter, or support the write-in process once the new Senate is seated. Might I suggest allowing a write-in candidate if they get a certain number of 'signatures' on a 'petition' from registered voters in the region or district in question?

Just some thoughts...since BOTH my region AND my district have unopposed candidates, I need to know if I should bother voting for anything other than the exciting Gubernatorial race! Smiley

There is a GOP write-in candidate running against Lewis Trondheim in District 5, and the District has very few voters, so you might want to vote in that race at least.

Wildcard,

I am considering a run for Western Region Senator.  Would I have your support in such a run?
