There used to be a majority black population there, around the Civil War days, correct? What happened?

Big exodus from ca.1900 to ca.1970, as everywhere; plus white northern retirees moving in in larger numbers than, say, Mississippi or Alabama. (Though less than Florida.)

Mississippi and South Carolina both had Black majorities for over a hundred years, reaching up to 60% at times. Florida had Black majorities right around the civil war for a short while. Georgia was very close to 50% Black for half a century. Louisiana too.

I believe that Mississippi was the last majority black state. However, sometime between the 1910 census and 1920 census, it became majority white.

Reason: Many blacks moved to industrial cities in the North. This is why cities in the North have as many black people as they do.

Yup.  Since Blacks couldn't vote anyother way about conditions in the South, they voted with their feet.
