I can't believe people get jailed/settlements/punishments, etc for hurling insults. How ridiculous have things become?

Black men used to get lynched in the South for just looking the wrong way at a white woman..

No one gets jailed for insults, but I'll agree that the amount of money awarded in this sort of case is excessive

Well, I agree that actually physically hurting an innocent person is deplorable if a white due hollered at some random black dude, "Hang that n*gger", I don't think that should really be a punishable offense no matter how disgusting it is.

I think that those count as "fighting words," and would probably constitute a breach of the peace.

A breach of the peace charge would be fine; however, hate speech and hate crime legislation is ridiculous.
