These were days when Democrats actually won rural whites but Dallas and Houston were still reliably Republican, and El Paso?!
I mean, this clearly doesn't hold true anymore, but it's pretty universally accepted that the suburban South accepted Republicanism WAY before the rural areas, which tended to have more Yellow Dogs (I think most of these people died off rather than switched parties).
