"Libertarian-leaning Republican Sen. Rand Paul decided to skip the slow motion trainwreck that is the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, and he has a pretty good excuse: he's in Kentucky, performing pro bono eye surgery on blind patients."

This may be the first time a politician's decision has universal approval, but good on him.

That's a lie. On what planet does a libertarian do pro-bono work? If he didn't want to go to the convention he should have just said so.

He should have stood by Cruz and led a delegate walkout. But not being there to help people is a good reason.

Because he likes to help people? (Libertarians are all about private sector charity) And if you want to go full Objectivist about it: he can use the good press to promote his poll numbers or business.

Good. He may be the 2020 Republican Presidential nominee, or he may leave the party, and join the Libertarian Party by 2018. He'll still caucus with the GOP Senate

An ounce of charity doesn't undo a ton of opposing societal goodwill.
