My shortlist would consist five people for each candidate.

THE HILL:

- Tim Kaine: experienced, swing state, nice guy, safe pick
- Michael Bennet: youth, swing state, legislative experience
- Martin Heinrich: see above minus swing state
- Sherrod Brown: popular with leftists, swing state
- George Clooney: outsider, popular, could play the attack dog

THE DONALD:

- John Kasich: broad experience in executive and legislative branches, foreign and defense policy experience, a solid record as gov, nice and calm guy, appeals to moderates and Democrats, swing state (absolute favorite)
- Brian Sandoval: latino, executive experience, popular in the west plus swing state
- Jon Huntsman: executive and foreign policy experience, popular
- Nikki Haley: woman, executive experience, daughter of immigrants, youth, popular with GOP base
- Michael Flynn: credible outsider ticket, bipartisanship (could attract dissaffected Democrats), foreign and military experience
