Anyone in IRC might recall me mentioning I was heading out to play Ingress in the most dangerous neighborhood in Minneapolis a couple hours ago, mostly so I could point out to the gun lovers I went there without a gun and came back perfectly fine. I've been there countless times after dark, especially since it's on the way home for me for a job I had where I worked night shift a few times, but I've always stuck to the main streets. But this time I was hunting down every portal I could get to meet an Ingress goal and thus went to every weird little side street, back alley and corner, so I saw some pretty damn surreal sites in all just barely over an hour. A few highlights:
-A prostitute on Lake Street wearing only a red bra as her top. Even on Lake Street I've never seen one dressed like that before. -When I pulled into the parking lot of a currently closed grocery store to hack a portal, another car pulled in as well and then right next to me. I then noticed the driver turns his head toward me. I panicked and fled out of there. -I pulled in front of a Pentecostal church briefly to do a hack, and noticed three women sitting on the steps in front of it, all smoking. It was dark of course but I think from what I could make out they weren't smoking cigarettes. Not that a person smoking a joint in south Minneapolis is a notable or shocking site, even in public...but here instead of outside of some hipster bar? Yeah not what I expected. -Near Little Earth, effectively an urban Reservation, a little girl, probably 9-10 dribbling a basketball around into an empty parking lot of a community clinic. And wasn't deterred in the slightest by me pulling into the parking lot so I could hit a portal and turn around. Here we have an area where kids that age wander into empty parking lots on a mostly commercial aka non-residential street after 10pm where there is virtually no lighting...that might actually be the most depressing thing I saw tonight. -A prepaid cell phone store that was not only open, but busy and vibrant. A bunch of Somali men were all inside browsing around. Somalis in a prepaid cell phone store near a heavily Somali neighborhood is also not a site that should surprise anyone...but after 10pm?
But even that wasn't as odd as just a block away. A barbershop...with a neon open sign. At not only past 10, but 10:30pm.
So uh, yeah. Anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea why that might be the case?
