Horrible person, but one hell of a legislator. Voted both.

As a person, abominable, if amusing.  Domestically, one of the greatest ever.  FP, abominable.  Voted both.

Probably the biggest 'both' out there. If you haven't seen 'All The Way' watch it. Great movie.

One of the most complicated figures in American politics - about 60% HP, 35% FF, and 5% wtf. I think he did a lot of good for the country i.e. Medicare and Civil Rights, but at the same time had one of the most horrifying foreign policy blunders in U.S. history occur under his watch. I voted both.

I agree with everyone - very complicated figure.

Disagree strongly with his economic policy, but obviously civil rights were good. Vietnam was a quagmire, for obvious reasons.  I voted Both, but it tilts more in the HP direction.

Would have easily voted for Barry Goldwater in '64.

Would have easily voted far and away against Barry Goldwater in '64.

FF for getting the Civil Rights Act and associated reforms through, and for not giving up on Vietnam. HP for some of his later domestic agenda, and seems like a massive HP on a personal level. Complicated, consequential figure, and I voted "both".

HP, and modern liberals' fascination with him is creepy and weird.

Yeah, silly modern day liberals caring about those poors and darks!

The far more disturbing trend is liberals/leftists who identify as such solely based on being "muh anti war." Especially since foreign policy hardly fits on a left/right spectrum anyway, and thinking it does is a very recent phenomenon. Yeah, Vietnam was a disaster, but it's not like foreign policy disasters are uncommon for American presidents. He still did more good than bad from a left wing perspective.

Yeah the reason one would find latter day veneration of LBJ creepy and ahistorical is because of that. Roll Eyes

I legitimately used to describe my foreign policy views as left-of-center for favoring an American presence in the world (both financially through foreign aid and militarily for "being the world police").

I take the same position, but I don't think it's left or right, hawkish or dove...it's just a sane position and the libertarians love harping me on it. Most of the time when I get attacked on foreign aid it almost always goes in a antisemitic or islamophobic direction.

"The Jews are manipulating the economy by taking foreign aid."
"The Moslems Are using our foreign aid to conquer teh worlds!!!!111"

Foreign Aid is great for building relations, having political leverage, and for building strong infrastructure.

I agree, I do not think it's a left-right issue (similar to civil rights, sorry red avatars), I was just saying if anything it might even be a more liberal view than a conservative one.
