Eh, I'd love to bash Obama for the sixty eighth hundredth time, but the fact that he took even just five minutes to meet with this woman was kind of him. And I am sure she understands-she also probably got to meet Biden and tour the parts of the White House that most visitors don't get to see.

Not bashing Obama specifically. Any politician would do it, which is why I realized a few years ago that I could never really be one. This woman has lived for over a century and they treat her like an exotic token. It's just sad.

I totally see what you're getting at here, but if I lived until I was 106 and got to be a minor celebrity and meet a bunch of people because of it, I think I'd be totally fine with the stilted small talk.  For most of us normals, it would legitimately be the biggest and most interesting accomplishment of our lives

Besides, there's really only so far you can delve into someone's thrilling past in a 45-second photo op.  I've certainly had dozens of more irritating, reductive 45-second conversations at parties tbh.

...Besides, there's really only so far you can delve into someone's thrilling past in a 45-second photo op.  I've certainly had dozens of more irritating, reductive 45-second conversations at parties tbh.

Yeah.  Sounds like someone needs to get out more.  When you start going to cocktail parties populated by colleagues from your profession and luminaries from the community you will spend countless hours of your life smiling vacuously and making totally empty banal conversation just to seem personable and avoid offending people you know almost nothing about.
