A different America(1988 convention edition)

Entering the 1988 convention , the unemployment has fallen to 5.8%, inflation, and interest rates have dropped to long time lows. On the other hand the national debt has increased by record highs under President Reagan  which makes many Americans worry if the country has sacrificed economic success in the long run  for benefit  in  the short run.  Also a few months ago the Soviet Union has announced that not only will they leave Afghanistan by August of next year, but that they have agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenal without the condition that America stops its Star Wars program and withdraws the extra troops they deployed to Europe in the 80s. This and the condition of the economy has caused President Reagan approval to go back up to 59%.

On the Republican side Bush is running on continuing President Reagan's policies while his opponent Bob Dole also promises to continue President Reagan's policies and is arguing that Vice President Bush would not continue Reagan policies reminding that Bush called Reagan's economic policies "Voodo economics". Ron Paul has also jumped in arguing that President Reagan's policies dont go far enough claiming he will get rid of the income tax altogether  while pledging to reverse the New Deal, Great Society, and end the Drug War. He also claims that President Reagan's military buildup has increased tensions with the Soviet unions and he will reverse that policy.

On the Democratic side Ted Kennedy and Dukakis have attacked President Reagan on recklessly deregulating the economy which he claims caused Black Monday in 1987. They also claim that Reagan's tax cut caused the deficit to go up tremendously  and they both  pledge to reverse them while they are in office. Dukakis also claims that Reagan drug war has failed and believes that the Death Penalty should be abolished at state and federal level. On the other hand Al Gore is running as an New Democrat claiming that he is not like the Democrats from the old claiming that he will cut taxes on the bottom 99% while raising the tax bracket of the top 1% to 40%. Gore distances himself from other old school Democrats by claiming he believes that welfare should be a second chance and not a way of life.  Unsatisfied by the candidates Jesse Jackson jumps in to race running on a platform of universal healthcare, decriminalizing drug use, raising the tax rates to what it was in the 1950s,believes that not only should the deregulations from the Reagan years but also from the Carter and Ford years, and lastly says he would cut the military budget significantly and will spend the money on welfare programs.

Currently the Republican nomination looks to be down to Dole and Paul, which is completely unexpected as  Vice President Bush was heavily favored to win the nomination. In the Democratic side Gore leads though it's still too early to count anybody out.

Polls show Gore is currently leading Paul 49%-42% while he is tied with Dole at 46% .

Jackson, I guess, just to appeal to my Paul v. Jackson fantasy.

Ron Paul currently has a solid lead lead in the race for the GOP nomination, while  it looks like the Democratic convention is going to be deadlocked as no candidate currently even is close to having over 50% of the delegates required to win the nomination.

Seeing that Paul endorsed Reagan over Ford in 1976 and the fact that Ford is more towards the GOP Establishment the only possible way I see Ford becoming a VP is if Dole or Bush can somehow find a way to win the nomination

Ron Paul has pulled off a major upset beating the heavily favored Vice President bush and the candidate who most people thought had the 2nd best chance to win Senator Dole . This win was so unexpected that it may signal that not only have people have taken Reagan's "Government is not the solution to our problems, Government is the problem to heart and now want to take it to whole another extreme. Now we will head to the Ron Paul Campaign where he will give a short victory speech.

Ron Paul to his supporters : "Over these past few months you all have proved that we can roll back big government and restore America to what it was founded on (cheering). Over the past 60 year the federal government has grown so big, passed so many unconstitutional laws and we will reverse it and roll back Government to the size it was in the 1920s( cheering)."

Now over at the Democratic side it looks like their convention will be deadlocked as no candidate as a majority of the delegates even with Micheal Dukakis dropping out and endorsing Kennedy which means we will be heading for round 2 with Kennedy, Jackson, Gore still in the race. Hopefully it ends in a civil way and not a repeat of 1968.

I was suggesting it as a "Grand Coalition"-style ticket, but whatever.
