Hey everyone Smiley

I want my Senate campaign to be something different.  I want to learn all about the region which I will hopefully represent.

Therefore, I'm going to embark on an internet road trip throughout the Southeast.  I will be making daily stops on the internet to different places in the Southeast.  At each place, I will be making speeches regarding issues related to the place.

Tonight, I will begin my trip in Miami, Florida.

Hope to get to as many places as I can.  Also, please feel free to ask questions after each speech, and comment as much as you want.

Thanks Smiley

Ben Meyers :: Road Trip Across the Southeast :: Stop 1
Miami, Florida

The first stop of Ben Meyers' road trip across the Southeast was beautiful Miami, Florida.

Ben Meyers toured downtown Miami, an area filled with skyscrapers and high-rise condominiums.  He then proceeded to visit Coconut Grove, where his first house still stands.

Ben then visited Little Havana, a representation of the diversity of cultures in the Southeast.

"Para todos los hispanohablantes en Miami y en todo del sureste, voy a ser una persona que trabaja para ustedes! For all the Spanish speakers in Miami and in all the Southeast, I will be a person that works for you!"

Ben Meyers also made a speech regarding his immigration policy.

"Immigration is what makes our nation and our region diverse and great.  One of my ancestors came here on the Mayflower.  Others crossed the Atlantic from places as distant as Romania and Ukraine.

Our nations gains strength and diversity from immigration, and I will never make an attempt to stop people who honestly want to come into this country lawfully and start a new life here.

Illegal immigration is a much different story.  Illegal immigration is a crime, and leads to more crimes.  The majority of immigrants, even the majority of illegal immigrants, are fairly decent people.  However, so many are criminals.

There has been a recent influx in crimes committed by illegal immigrants, and as a Senator, it is my job to keep the populace safe.  Therefor, as Senator, I will fight for tougher border patrol and regulations.  If this problem continues, I will call for a reasonable amount of soldiers from the American military to patrol the borders.

However, here in Miami, those who come from Cuba can be welcomed.  All those who come here legally are people who are searching for a better life in the greatest country in the world!"

Good speech.  Your immigration speech is fairly close to mine from the other day.  However, I don't like the idea of using the military to patrol our borders.  Military must be reserved for foreign conflicts.  I much prefer to beef up the border patrol.  If we are both elected, I look forward to working with you on this issue.

Your immigration policy sounds much like the one I have proposed before, and which was also proposed by FuturePrez in a similar format in a speech he gave earlier.

Nonetheless, I agree with FuturePrez that the best way to do things is to increase Border Patrol, not to put the military on the borders.  A number of about 3,000 new Border Patrol agents over the next 3 years, along with 1,000 new INS agents to handle paperwork, etc. should be an excellent start.

Also, illegal immigrants will continue to get around any Border Patrol/ military or whatever unless you give them reasons to not become illegal immigrants.

This is the reason why I will support the guest worker pass/initiative that FuturePrez has proposed in his speech.  With proper incentives for illegal immigrants, we can make illegal immigrants become legal immigrants and members of society we know about, instead of citizens on the edges of society.

Thank you for your comments, and I look forward to working with you both on this very important issue Smiley

I support using the military on the border as a last resort only.  If we see a continuation of this major problem of illegal immigration, then we must take immediate, strong action.

We shouldn't tap on the cockroach, we should stomp it.

About issuing guest worker passes, etc., I don't think that we should encourage or reward crimes.  I think that people should prove their citizenship by obeying by our laws and entering our country the right way.  Then, they can contribute to this nation in the way that previous immigrants have.

I strongly disagree that issuing guest worker passes would encourage or reward crimes.  This would be a way for those who only want to cross to work to do so legally.  I also disagree with those who want the guest worker pass to be a path to citizenship.  It should be for temporary seasonal work.  By giving those who only want to honestly make a living a pass (after background checks and all that), border patrol can concentrate on catching those who still enter illegally only now they have a higher probability of being criminals or terrorists.

FuturePrez, your points are good ones.  To tell you the truth, I would be willing to issue Guest Worker passes in order to make those who genuinely want to enter the country to do so legally.

If we are both elected, I'm sure I will enjoy working with you on this important issue Smiley
