What is the rationale for this? People flying too close to aircraft or peeping toms or what?

Safety is the excuse they use.

The registration seems burdensome, but without an enforceable strict-liability regime for drones I understand wanting to know whose drone crashed through your roof or took photos through your window.

Seriously, if there is one thing I actually want to be banned, it's drones. No government drones. No private drones. No Amazon drones.

Boo!  We need a free market for airspace!  Let the market decide which planes should and not should crash into each other. Smiley

If I strap some guns to my drone, then I don't have to register it, right?

This will do nothing to prevent that.

I understand you don't quite get gun laws, and I also understand you're trying to make a joke.  Thank you for your time.

On the off chance that you are a drone owner: the alternative is a potential $27,500 fine.

I do have a small drone. The regulation applies to drones that weigh at least 9 ounces, and I haven't weighed mine, but I imagine it's probably a bit over.

If she was actually in fear like she claimed, she would have ran/ducked for cover/etc, not thrown rocks at it.  You don't throw rocks when you're scared, you throw rocks when you're angry.  It's why the courts ruled she was in the wrong and had to pay.

link-youtubes of a local news report on the story

I don't understand how any sane person can read the story or watch the video and call the drone owner the douchebag in this situation.

Fairly straight forward, man.  A lot of people have done some dumb things with drones and now the government has to step in.  If idiots would stay away from airports, flight paths, and the White House the only thing 70 year old senators would think of when the word drone was said is killing Muslim children... like pavlovian conditioning.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Strange that people who post on a politics forum haven't heard of this.

When you're an old woman (I'm sure it's coming soon for you) and under attack you defend yourself if you can.  I would have shot it out of the sky.

And you would, just like her, be in the wrong and have had to pay too.  Probably a little more since you claim you'd be dumb enough to use a gun.

Nevermind the fact that she obviously wasn't "under attack".

Every new invention needs to be regulated to death by the government. Ugh.
