This is depressing but Donald trump has effectively made this significantly more mainstream among the conservative base. A lot of people in the conservative base aren't true fiscal conservatives anyways and only want big government for themselves. They're who trump seems to be appealing to. Also, there's a big "support it because liberals hate it" mentality among the base so the amount of controversy it draws from liberals makes them more inclined to support it.
