I just wanted to wish everyone on the Atlas Forum a happy Columbus Day and I hope that you all enjoy your day off. No really, I do.

On another note, it's kind of silly to want to abolish it or rename it. There are more important issues like the national budget and the police stepping out of line.

I agree. Just another stupid issue to divide us from real issues. Have a nice day off if people are lucky to have their day off.

Ugh!  If there are more important issues why didn't you post about them?  Pretty obvious post to stir the pot.  Well played, sir.

It annoys me when people dismiss some issues wholly just because there are other "more important" issues to deal with. If we only focused on the absolutely most vital issues and ignored everything else, society would crumble and quality of life would plummet. Stop dismissing important issues just because there might be other ones out there that are technically more important.

"We shouldn't be focusing on education and infrastructure right now because ISIS!" - this logic

Its not that there are issue that are more important, its that this issue is of no importance.  It is completely irrelevant and just distracts the country from real news and divides people.

If you don't want to celebrate Columbus Day then don't, nobody is forcing you, just like nobody forces anyone to celebrate Christmas just because it is a holiday.

Sometime circa 2007 or so some guy on another forum (music forum of course) on Columbus Day decided instead to label it "White People Suck Day" and we got a 300+ post thread of people basically posting long rants with racist slurs like "cracker" about how whites are so terrible despite the fact that probably every single person participating in it was white.

Self-depreciation and the ability to self-criticize is quite needed.

I mean, any intelligent human being can be self-deprecating. What we are seeing instead is complete detachment. In a... sense, it's that guy from the Newroom bashing Republicans while maintaining "credibility" since he's identified as one. If a group of African-Americans or Hispanics did it, such would be treated as, well, senseless identity politics. What this produces instead is not credibility, but just confusion. These poor souls who are in this... "movement" with you are not making fun of people they see as themselves. They are making fun of what they think "white" means: suburban, Republican, middle class, racist, conformist, yadda yadda yadda. Nevertheless, if these guys are correct, then they themselves are benefiting from all of these injustices. Thus, they are only in a position to get away with this because of their privilege. Or whatever. I have no idea where I'm going with. It's just purely nonsensical. Actually make fun of something you identify with: your made up religion, for example. Or the lack of musicianship in the things you listen to. You get my point.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I don't see it as a big deal that Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus.

Well, I've said that both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day should be holidays, so no.

Obviously it is a big enough deal for you to start a thread about it and keep repeatedly posting.

All political correctness debates aside, I don't think Columbus especially deserves a holiday.  He didn't REALLY discover America; he simply made it known to Europeans.  (And he didn't prove the world was round either; the ancient Greeks nearly 1800 years before Columbus' first voyage.)  If anything, Columbus Day should just be a day to celebrate Italian-American (and possibly Native American) history.

Of course you do Wulfric, you're from Minnesota. Tongue

Very true. And "stirring the pot," it did.
