I don't think Russians are really going to damage those cables. They are not that desperate. Damaging the cables will cause a really big harm not only to American economy but to Russian one as well. Surely, they got used to living isolated from the rest of the world as USSR broke apart not so long ago. But I believe that New York Times is just overreacting as always.

I too thought that was kind of silly.  My wife work for a company that runs websites for businesses, mainly small industrial companies, and her biggest pain in the butt is hack attacks from Russia. She's convinced that is the only thing they do in Russia.  Why would Russia kill their number one industry? (Ok, number two after oil)

I mean how else are the gonna hack Hillary's email?

If not though, it's obvious they aren't trying to damage the cables right now guys - they're scouting vulnerabilities they would be able to use in event of war. Also I think the article had a good point here:
