Okay, that sounds much more reasonable. Will this help fight illegal immigration, in the sense that they won't be able to get federal services?

Also, what if you don't have a driver's license? Rare, I know, but you can get one suspended or something, right?

Yes, this is also an anti-illegal immigration bill, and will likely be portrayed as such more than anti-terrorism.

What if you're not a citizen, but you're here legally, and you need a driver's license? They can't give you one, or does it just say on it that you're not a citizen?

Just an update - Real ID has been passed by the Senate...unanimously(even the Dems have no excuse).

It was an amendment to some other bill.

In other words they are too damn lazy to read the legislation they vote for - that's not a legitamite excuse.

Well, technically a no vote would have been also voting against some emergency money for Afganistan. I admit it's not a good excuse, but it should be noted that it was snuck in as an amendment. Most Democrats voted against it in the House, where it was a seperate bill.

Just some other news - seems like a lot of the states are pissed off about Real ID and may challenge it in court or outright disobey it.

My guess: the SCOTUS upholds it by a bitter partisan 5-4 vote, everyone voting the same way as in Bush vs. Gore.

Yeah, thanks for completely ignoring everything that was said in this topic. There's nothing to disobey, at all, in any way. It's not a requirement. It's an option, for if a state wants its citizens to be able to use their IDs for federal purposes.

From the article earlier:

- Flying to see a relative in another state?  Don’t forget your papers:   Domestic travelers could not pass through airport security checkpoints without a passport or a "Real" I.D. card.
- Want to serve your country? Apply for a passport first:  Prospective military enlistees could not meet identification requirements with only state issued identification.
- Want to get a job? Not without federal documentation:  The INS I-9 form is a required document for all U.S. workers.  Section Two of the form requires identification to be examined by the employer.  As no federal agency will accept "old" driver's licenses, your I.D. would no longer be valid.  Be sure to bring your passport along to your next job interview.

Right. So let's look at those.

1. Will almost certainly be enforced by the federal government.
2. Federal purpose; nothing to disobey
3. Federal workers; nothing the states can do about it

When I see 'U.S. workers' I don't see that as 'federal workers' - that's anyone who works in the United States.

Alright, well I haven't read the bill, but it seems to imply federal workers to me, because it talks about federal agencies. Anyway, if it's anyone working in the U.S., it's obviously unconstitutional and I imagine will be struck down by the SCOTUS in a near unanimous (Rehnquist being the only one I see possibly dissenting).

Another good reason to have a line item veto.

Breaking news:
All 100 Senators voted to pass the appropriations
bill as well as the Real ID Act!
Anyone who thinks there's a difference between the two parties is, again, kidding themselves...

If both parties voted to outlaw murder in Puerto Rico, you'd say there wasn't a difference between the two parties.

Do you have anything to worry about?

When I applied for a state civil service position, way back in 1992, I had to produce proof of citizenship, ID, Social Security Number (among other things).

When I got the job, and was a welfare caseworker, clients had to produce proof of age, citizenship, ID, residency, and Social Security (among other things) to get welfare benefits.

I'm not seeing putting some of these things on one card to be a huge problem, provided there are alternatives.

What does that have to do with anything?  Both parties are controlled by greedy money-obsessed idiots who only care about fame and power; they'll vote for any bill that would give them good publicity.  That's why they voted 100-0 for the appropriations bill, and it's why they'd vote 100-0 for a bill banning murder in Peurto Rico.  You act as if they actually care about Peurto Rico.  Quit bringing up irrelevant stuff like this; you'll start sounding like jfern if you keep doing that.

Or maybe they, I don't know, agree with it...

Do you think all of the Democrats besides Russ Feingold agree with the Patriot Act?

The point here is that similarity on one issue doesn't mean similarity on every issue.

The REAL ID passes 100-0. Bush's tax cuts didn't. Social Security reform sure hasn't. The partial-birth abortion ban didn't. The ban on lawsuits against gun manufactures won't, I assure you.
