A  story on the MLAs

Gary Lauk by Jonathan Baker (Former NPA Vancouver City Councillor)
http://jonathan-baker.blogspot.ca/2012/12/politics-art-of-impossible.html

"I met Lauk, not to long after he had been made Minister of Trade and Commerce.  He had just suggested that the government would nationalize the telephone company.  I tactfully volunteered that his remarks had tanked the price of BC TELS's stock.  Since a lot of the union pension funds were invested in the BC Tel, I asked him what he would do to his enemies if this was how he treated his friends.

He replied, “You have got to realize that we are a socialist government.  We are not a bunch of U.S. Democrats.  We are socialists, and yes, we will nationalize the phone company.  The banks are next.”
(My note: The NDP didn't nationalize either, except for a few bankrupt businesses that they wanted to save (which were privatized under Social Credit under BCRIC, whose shares are now worthless) and a housing corporation that they bought to build subsidized housing - which Social Credit later sold at a huge profit), the NDP actually didn't nationalize much of anything, unless you count ICBC.)

Lauk remained in opposition after the NDP’s loss in 1975. He ultimately gave up his seat to Mike Harcourt.  I got to know him well after that.  He was a terrific litigator.  We would frequently meet for lunch with the same group of lawyers.

Fast forward to the Glen Clark administration
Young Premier Glen Clark had just announced his intention to levy a significant tax  on houses.  The real estate industry writhed and gagged.  The housing market was finished – forever. (My note: hardly 'forever' it turns out)  As I reflected on galaxies in collision, I saw Lauk coming out of a Court Room.  I walked over to him and said, “Well my socialist friend.  What do you think of your Premier's new tax?”

Lauk, who owned a nice place in West Vancouver, glared and said, “Those F***ing Communists!”

This explains quite a lot about BC politics.

1960 Saskatchewan CCF-NDP.

In 1961-1962 the Federal CCF changed their name to the CCF-NDP, then shortly after, just NDP, as the party officially merged with the, I believe, Canadian Labour Congress.
I'm not sure if the Saskatchewan CCF also adopted the name 'CCF-NDP'

In 1961 Party Leader and Premier Thomas (Tommy) Douglas resigned to become Federal NDP leader, easily defeating Saskatchewan M.P Hazen Argue.

Longtime Education Minister turned Finance Minister and Deputy Premier after the retirement of Clarence Fines, Woodrow Lloyd, won the leadership and became Premier, defeating 1960 elected MLA and Minister of Co-Operation and Co-Operative Development Olaf Turnbull by a 2-1 margin.

The Saskatchewan CCF won 37 of 54 seats with 40.8% (a net gain of one seat with a drop of nearly 5% from 1956) of the vote in a four way race in 1960.

The NDP narrowly lost the 1964 Saskatchewan election largely on the basis of the Saskatchewan Medical Association lead backlash to the introduction of medicare.

The CCF elected two women, a 100% increase!
