I remember back in 2012, when he gave Obama an 80-90% chance of winning.  Sure, Obama did win, but I don't think his chances were ever that high.

If we lived in Japan, then Nate Silver would have honorably killed himself and shut down the website after the Germany-Brazil 7-1 game. Unfortunately, he is as big a coward as he is a charlatan.

For some insane reason they care about the 2015 Women's World Cup more than current club football.

Suits my interests perfectly. What kind of true leftist sh**s on women's sports?

Because the former is both far more watched and on a far higher level of play? I'd never denigrate women's football but to suggest it's more worthy of analysis is ludicrous. But Americans for some reason assume that the entire sport consists of international tournaments.

The Women's World Cup is the most important women's sporting event in the world. Even if it's not as popular, or not as exciting, it is certainly more worth of analysis because it is the most important sporting event for half of the world's population. You have inadvertently denigrated half the world's population, congratulations.

Silver predicted that Obama would win 80-90% of the vote, you see.  That must be Oldies' interpretation.

So people only watch their own gender play sports now (and anyway, the Olympics is probably more important as a women's sporting event)? Thinking the women's international football (or at this point men's, but that's another debate) is more important or more prestigious than European club football is a mindset entirely limited to those who only care about international football and only watch that every four years--which is to say people (particularly Americans, Canadians, and East Asians) who know nothing about the sport.

This isn't about gender, this is about what's most relevant and important to analyze--but Americans just don't understand the sport outside of international tournaments.

No, the (men's) World Cup and Olympics are objectively more important than any level of club soccer.

Yeah, that goes without saying. Nobody really cares about Olympic Soccer. Hatman is proving to be woefully ignorant if he doesn't think the Champions League is far, far, far more important than winning at the Olympics.

Also, while the World Cup is clearly considered the greatest honor for any player and for the overwhelming majority of fans, you'll find some truly fanatical club fans that will sincerely tell you they don't give a damn about a national team and would honestly choose seeing their club succeed over their national team (if they even support a national team). Hell, ask a Dortmund fan what they'd prefer right now: Germany winning the World Cup again in 2018 or Dortmund avoiding relegation this year. Then you'll see which is more important to the fans. A fan's livelihood is definitely more closely tied to how their club does than their national team.

My opinion of Nate Silver is unchanged. He's a good analyst regarding data and falters when separated from it. My opinion of fivethirtyeight is pretty low, though: the people he brought on are not to his standards.

Look, I'm a dumb American who thinks the only "football" worth caring about is neither handled by the foot nor ball-shaped, and even I know that club soccer is more important than the Olympics.

I don't know anything about football but I'm pretty sure Olympic football is completely irrelevant and arguing that it's more important, let alone objectively so (Huh) is clearly absurd.

Correct. It's something for people to watch as casually as possible right after the Euros/before the league seasons begin. And the Olympic teams are also made up of the younger, non-senior team national players so it's more of a scouting occasion than anything else.

I think Hatman might just be letting his bias show because Canada, as a country, is generally successful at the Olympics while their club teams are part of the joke MLS.

Oh I was arguing that the Champion's League was more important than the entire Olympics, not just the soccer part of it. Olympics soccer is basically a glorified youth competition

i seem to remember most atlasians (with a red avatar) loved nate silver circa 2008.  what changed?

it is obvious that siver is trying to move beyond politics.  i think that is a good thing.  his site is much more well rounded these days.

Yes. Silver started as a sports analyst and probably prefers that to politics.
