This is a variation of the "Biden Steps Down As Veep" question.

In The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin's final episodes involved the resignation of the Vice President. The solution by the Republican congress was to offer a list of people they would confirm. It was not an impressive bunch.

So let's say Biden steps down as Veep. Boehner and McConnell over President Obama a list of individuals who would get congressional approval. Who makes the list?

No One. The Current Tea Party/GOP would probably prefer President Boehner to a Democratic VP (though only just)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, or retiring Sen. Carl Levin come to mind.

The whole point of the GOP plot in those last episodes were to force Bartlet from choosing a successor. That's why Bartlet wanted his SoS Berryhill originally, as he believed Berryhill would be the best bet for a Democrat winning the White House after his second term was over. Since the heir-presumptive (and also ironically, SoS) Hilary Clinton doesn't need to have VP to position herself as a viable candidate, the GOP would probably just force the office to remain empty or try to pull some 'bipartisan' message crap and push for a Republican to take the job.

If the Republicans were to not approve any of a couple of reasonable choices, Obama shouldn't bend, and the position should be vacant as a long term reminder of how completely insane Republicans of the 2010s were.

The West Wing equivalent would be choosing someone like Tom Carper or Ed Markey. Someone  respectful they can say is qualified for the job, but not someone who could be a serious presidential candidate.

In this scenario, Republicans would have two strategies. They could pick someone who would not be effective as a national Democrat, or who would be potentially replaced by a Republican.

My list of names...

Nancy Pelosi
Barney Frank
Harry Reid
Eric Holder
Tim Kaine- It would require a special election in November 2015.
Mark Warner- See above.
Bill Nelson- Rick Scott gets to select the replacement.
Heidi Heitkamp- The Republican Governor appoints a replacement, who serves until the special election in a very conservative state.
Sherrod Brown- Kasich selects the replacement.
Tammy Baldwin- There would be a special election to replace her in a state that goes for Republicans in non-presidential elections.
Maggie Hassan- Next in line in New Hampshire is the Republican leader of the State Senate.
Jay Nixon- Because Missouri has a Republican Lt. Governor.

Jay Nixon- Because Missouri has a Republican Lt. Governor.

maximum irony!

1. GOP forces Obama to propose Jay Nixon for VP
2. GOP pulls a 180 on Ferguson
3. GOP relentlessly attacks Obama administration for "failing to adequately respond" to police brutality involved in the death of Michael Brown
4. GOP uses Nixon's relative inaction to tie police brutality directly to Obama
5. "Obama supports a police state, he's promoting guys who are letting cops get away with murdering kids"
6. ? ? ?
7. GOP wins the black vote in 2016
