Warner isn't done, no one will care two years from now how much he won by.

Why would someone considering him for VP not care? Most of his appeal was for the bump in Virginia.

Exactly. Take away the notion of a Warner pick locking down VA, then he doesn't bring anything to the table that Kaine or some of the other prospective picks don't already bring themselves.

O'Malley's best bet is to hope Mikulski doesn't want another term in the Senate. He doesn't have much chance for national office if he's this unpopular in a very liberal state.

Warner should be fine. A narrow reelection didn't keep Pawlenty from making McCain and Romney's shortlists. But making him Veep might cost Democrats a Senate seat, especially with Gilespie as a potential Republican nominee.

It's also worth noting the limited alternatives. Losses in '14 mean that Paul Davis, Charlie Crist and Anthony Brown won't be considered. Hickenlooper's relection was similarily narrow. Kaine's numbers aren't better than Warner's.

Julian Castro and Michael Bennet seem like the big veepstakes winners.

Can we please stop acting like Gillespie is a great candidate? He rode the wave in the state that is a microcosm of the country. That's all.

Warner's problem was a lot about turnout and the national atmosphere. He's still well liked as a popular former governor. That said, I think Hillary needs a Governor/DC outsider so he would not be my pick.

If O'Malley is a Democratic nominee, not in 2016, but maybe 2024, can he even win his home state?

Let Hogan finish his first term before providing him with a Senate seat.

It'll be hilarious if/when the GOP nominates him in 2017 on the auspices of "but he almost beat Warner!" and then either Northam or Herring mops the floor with him.

"Well, I was going to choose Mark Warner as my running mate, but he won re-election to the US Senate in a squeaker, not by a huge margin."

"Martin O'Malley was totally on my shortlist, but the Democrat who ran for the Governor's seat after him got beat, so he's out."

-things I'm 100% positive Hillary Clinton will never say

As for becoming President? The possibilities of either a Warner or O'Malley Administration were already non-existent.
This!

Anyway, I don't get the obsession with O'Malley's looks. Do people think he's THAT attractive or do they just think he looks presidential? If it's the former, how many people were elected president because they looked attractive? If it the latter, I can see the point (as it has arguably helped a few candidates in the past), but if anyone ever looked like an "american president" it was Mitt Romney, and he still got crushed by "the black guy", to put it bluntly.

Does this mean my "O'Malley 2016" apron is now worthless?

O Malley desperately wants to be president. He could run in 2020 or 2024 too.

He's probably going to have to get elected to the Senate, in order to be taken credibly in the future. Otherwise, it'll be too long since he held office. And the last moment for his political career would be the defeat of his chosen successor in a very liberal state.

Martin O'Malley is only hot in a generic way.

There are more f**kable politicians, including some Republicans I hate to admit I'd roll in the hay with.
