This. It was just a year or two ago my mother, an unwavering Democrat, gave me his autobiography and said I should read it. I don't know how politically astute he is, because if he had avoided making such remarks and stuck to speaking ambiguously about values, he could have been a strong contender for the Senate in 2016 if Mikulski were to retire.

Heck, no one is paying attention now, he could probably make a decent effort as-is. It isn't bad he is getting all this money in support... makes you wonder if this is actually his plan. It's probable that he is not clever enough to have thought of that, but while cleverness and intelligence are different things, he is a neurosurgeon. But I doubt he'd make as far-out comments as he has been if that was the plan.
