Conventional wisdom says that when a presidential nominee picks a running mate, he or she is showing the country and maybe the world what type of decisions they will make as president. When McCain picked Palin in '08, some said he had poor judgement, some said he had good conservative judgment. Same with Obama picking Biden, with foreign affairs. Which potential 2016 veep picks would show something about the pres. nominee's judgment and their decision-making?
Democrats:
Mark Warner
Tim Kaine
Martin O'Malley
Amy Kloubchar
Elizabeth Warren
Kamala Harris
Brian Schweitzer
Steve Beshear
Julian Castro
Deval Patrick
Cory Booker
Steve Bullock
Evan Bayh

Republicans:
Susana Martinez
Brian Sandoval
Marco Rubio
John Thune
Bobby Jindal
Rob Portman
Kelly Ayotte
Ted Cruz
etc, etc...

It depends. Much of it comes down to spin and luck. Biden might have seen like a poor pick for Obama if Lehman Brothers had happened after the election, and McCain had been able to eke out a win. Someone with Palin's resume but more restraint/ self-awareness might have been seen as a solid running mate.

The top of the ticket matters when determining the response to the bottom of the ticket. Joe Biden and John Hickenlooper are two old white guys. Kirsten Gillibrand and John Hickenlooper are a balanced ticket.

You may have different kinds of positive responses. Chris Christie/ Susanna Martinez are Catholic prosecutors turned popular reelected Republican governors from Democratic leaning states. Paul Ryan/ Susanna Martinez is a balance ticket (Legislator with Executive, Midwest with Southwest, White guy with older Hispanic woman, Washington wonk with political outsider.)
