No runoffs in Slovakian local elections?
Anyway, Bratislava reverts to type, electing Ivo Nesrovnal (SDKU-DK and Most-Hld) over the accidental SMER incumbent. Presov also gets rid of its two term SMER-endorsed mayor in favor of the conservative coalition candidate. But in Trnava the voters have chosen a 32-year-old independent hipster* lawyer over the center-right coalition candidate (the incumbent left winger came third). SMER have retained Kosice and their stronghold Nitra. The rest have not reported in full yet.
* OK, I obviously don't know if he's a hipster, it just seems that way from his campaign
video.
My impression is that while there is a strong anti-Fico current - certainly the majority of the population would like to see him gone - the opposition isn't much more credible in their eyes. With abstention rates far ahead of the winning percentage in many places, there is not enough trust in politics to
make things better, and so Fico may yet continue his semi-charmed political life.
