Privately-owned prisons are a blight on our region's (and our country's) justice system. These prisons are subject to atrocious, neglected, unsanitary, and dangerous conditions that are well below governmental standards. Private prison companies basically profit off of the incarceration of more people, which disproportionately consist of racial minorities. Unfortunately, the Midwest's scope of power restricts it from being able to abolish the private ownership of federal correctional facilities and prisons.

I will obviously sign this billL. Although I think that Private Prisons are already prohibited by federal level, but I'm not sure.

I did a little more research on the wiki, and it says that no federal money can go towards private prisons. So, privately-owned federal prisons are already gone.

I don't know why I didn't push this during my term as Governor, but this has my support. The difference between the things that should be run by government and things that should be run by private industry is incentive: there is simply no way to create incentives for private prisons that doesn't cause corruption and massive harm. I think that they are a big mistake, and punishment for crimes should certainly be under complete government supervision.

I recall you telling me you were against Private Prisons by PM when you were still governor. Probably because you believed it was forbidden federally too?

I'm not sure, there was the education bill and a couple of other things I was promoting as Governor that I felt were perhaps more important. Either way, glad this is happening.

Well, I'm happy that this has plenty of support, including from you.

I, of course, support this bill. Not as many African Americans deserve to be as incarcerated as they are for these minor offenses just so private contractors can make a quick buck. (Also, sorry about the small lack of inactivity, I've been busy with finals and a few papers).
