If Dan Coats retires in 2016 which is not out of the question (he's 70 now) do you think Bayh stages a comeback? And who would the Rs run against him? Would he be a heavy favorite or a longshot bid in reddening Indiana?

I'm pretty sure Coats is already running, but Bayh would make it at least a toss-up if he ran.

He's better off running against Pence though

I don't think he'll do very well. Pence is kind of doing an awesome job.

Winning by only 3 in a likely-R state is underwhelming to say the least.

He underperformed on election day, but, like I said, he's doing well as Governor. I expect him to run his full course like Mitch.

Keep in mind, Rupert Boneham took 6% of the vote, most of which probably came from Pence.

I'm pretty sure Bayh left Indiana politics in 2010. He'd be willing to come back to elections, maybe, for a VP nomination and probably not for anything else.

Pence is a far stronger politician than Coats, Bayh could lose to Pence.

Bayh has two twins who were born in 1995. I could be way off, but maybe partly why he retired was to spend more time with the family before they went off to college (that, and to make a ton of money). Bayh will be just 60, which is young in the context of having already served almost 20 years as governor or senator. He also apparently has almost $10 million in his campaign account (link below). Finally, I imagine he's probably given up on the dream of being President, so if he wants a public office, it's Indiana or bust. Add it all up, and I think there's a good chance he runs for Governor or Senator in 2016 (of course, there's also a good chance he doesn't run).

I do NOT see Bayh going back to the United States Senate ever again.

He's 5-0 in statewide elections in Indiana, having won campaigns for IN Secretary of State in 1986, Governor in 1988, 1992 and United States Senator in 1998, 2004.

I'm betting he waits until 2020 to seek the governorship again after Pence does his 2 terms.
