Probably because Chavez and Maduro were/are both quite authoritarian themselves, thereby triggering sympathy for the opposition, whose flaws (which are still probably greater) are lesser known simply because they are not provided the opportunity of governance with which to demonstrate every one of their awful qualities.

I'm inclined to agree. Maduro is pretty incompetent and there's undeniably a ton of corruption at all levels of government, but anyone who says that the opposition will run things better/be more democratic is either naive or lying.

Honestly, what I hope happens is is that Capriles wins the next election. Hopefully that'd allow the Venezuelan left to come back in a less authoritarian incarnation.
