Using forum seniority as a moderating policy is laughable.

I get where Xahar is coming from in the sense that "people who have a good track record should be given a little leeway when they're in trouble over people with a bad track record" but that doesn't mean people should be treated different on the basis of how long they've been here. Seniority is stupid. I've believed that from when I was new to now that I am over 6 years old on this site.

The question of whether or not to ban opebo itself is a complicated one, but Gully was 100% right when he said this:

If this poster was new, and boasted of the things he boasts about now, like f'cking teenage girls for a few dollars an hour, he would be banned

No "community" or "forum culture" excuses these double standards.

The thing is that the forum doesn't have to become "more authoritarian" to start acting like that. I want consistent moderating principles, I don't want some sort of hyper-moderation.

this whole thing reeks of strawman.  it is well known that opebo is a sex tourist, frequents prostitutes, etc.  it is natural to know such a detail of someone's life after ten years and 40000 posts.  however, is it such a focal point of the dude's posts?  does he time after time point it out, assert it, in unrelated contexts?  sure, you'd be able to compile some list a dozen or two posts long, out of 40k, what value is this?

(not to go into the fact that Gully's hack-job explicitly pointed out opebo's posts *elsewhere on the internet*, in-fact revolved around those posts, which should hold no value whatsoever in these discussions).

I think that older posters should be given more leeway than newer ones, so no.

Is there actually any rational argument in favor of such discrimination? I never understood why it is so popular.

Obviously because we have contributed an enormous amount to the forum.

It could be argued that some members detract from the forum with every post.

Neither have I.

Can't the individual mods put different simple proposals, consistent with Dave's standards, together, discuss them, see if you can synthesize something, and then just see which one in the end gets a majority vote and then apply that one?

Half the mods virtually never visit the mod board or engage in any internal mod discussion anyway.  But even among those who do, there's just too much disagreement about everything for this to work, unless someone in authority steps forward and tries to manage it.

In any case, as Muon said, most of the moderation controversies are one-off judgment calls by a moderator that couldn't have been anticipated by any pre-existing overarching policy.

Of course you don't - you can't bear that there's anyone you can't have entirely under your thumb.

No. I just see no reason to treat newcomers as a lesser class of posters.

I should've thought your initial response to the appearance of anyone new would be to investigate him regarding this 'sock' nonsense.

If it'd mean Opebo would be banned, then yes.
