Are these not creepy, stalker-esque lyrics?

It is a stalker song--Sting has said from the beginning that it was.

Clearly an offensive and horrible song that no one should hear.

Clearly an offensive and horrible song that no one should hear.

I think it would be quite unfortunate, and not very informative, for artists to only speak to the pretty, fuzzy things in life.  They often have to speak to the darkness of human nature too, in order to reveal things to us about ourselves.  And sometimes the the best way to do that is to speak from or portray those dark recesses.  And often we find what we often don't like to acknowledge--that the line between what we value and what we abhor is often not so clear and distinct, and that most of us have the whole spectrum of these tendencies within us.  The stanza starting with "Since you've gone..." represents a vulnerable and lonely person who is heartbroken over someone's absence, and it's very easy for people to lose control at the very place where they are most vulnerable.  It's not like Sting or the Police are advocating men stalking women in this song.  The song, and many other songs and other artworks llike it, do however force us to look into a well of feelings that most of us actually have within us, despite our ideals, and perhaps might prompt us to be careful about them, given the degree of ugliness to which they can lead.  If art didn't do such things, it wouldn't be worth much.  That's why Plato's moralization of art was so horribly wrong, I think.

Indeed, it's almost as if that line is blurred...

Someone is failing to grasp the blindingly obvious difference between a literary treatment of horrible behavior, and an unironic celebration of same.
